The Comparative Study
The comparative study question asks you to compare two texts under one of the following three modes of comparison. In this case, 'compare' means point out similarities and differences. The comparative section is worth 70 marks.
The comparative modes for 2016 are:
1. General Vison and Viewpoint
2. Cultural Context
3. Literary Genre
Only two of the three modes will appear on the exam paper. Each mode that appears on the paper will have a choice of two questions. These questions take the format of single essay-type question for 70 marks or a question divided into (a) and (b) parts, with the (a) part requiring discussion of just one text for 30 marks and the (b) part requiring comparison of the two other texts for 40 marks.
You need to know your comparative texts well, but not in the same level of detail as your single text. Concentrate on key moments (can be an entire chapter or scene) in each text. A key moment in your text is one which illustrates or helps in the development of one of the chosen modes.
